Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has left Rasmus Højlund out of his squad for Sunday’s Premier League opener against Arsenal, fueling fresh speculation about the Danish striker’s future at Old Trafford.
Højlund, 22, will not feature in the much-anticipated clash at Old Trafford, with reports suggesting that AC Milan are monitoring his situation closely.
The Danish forward has publicly expressed his desire to remain at Manchester United, but the recent arrival of Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig for £73.7 million is expected to push Højlund further down the pecking order.
During United’s final pre-season friendly, Højlund was left on the bench, with Mason Mount deployed in a false nine role — a tactical shift that hinted at his diminished role in Amorim’s plans.
Club executives are said to have backed Amorim’s decision to omit the striker from the opening matchday squad, underlining a united front within United’s leadership.
Højlund, who joined from Atalanta for £72 million two years ago, managed 10 goals in 52 appearances last season. His debut campaign was more prolific, yielding 16 goals across all competitions.
As the new season begins, and with no formal transfer deal currently in place, Højlund’s future at Manchester United remains in serious doubt.
