Harry Kane scored a sensational second-half hat-trick, Michael Olise netted a brace, and new signing Luis Díaz also found the back of the net as Bayern Munich crushed RB Leipzig 6–0 in their Bundesliga season opener on Friday night.
Bayern’s big-money signings—each brought in from the Premier League over the past three seasons—showcased their dominance as the reigning champions began their title defence in emphatic style at the Allianz Arena.
Olise struck twice in the first half, either side of a thunderous Díaz goal, to give Bayern a commanding 3–0 lead at halftime. Not to be outshone, Kane took over after the break, netting in the 64th, 74th, and 78th minutes to complete his hat-trick and seal a statement win for the Bavarians.
The 32-year-old England captain now has seven Bundesliga hat-tricks since joining Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023. He was substituted to a standing ovation in the 86th minute, with Bayern firmly in control.
Leipzig Struggle Under New Structure
The result was a harsh reality check for RB Leipzig, who are entering their first season following a structural reshuffle under Jürgen Klopp, now serving as Red Bull’s global head of football. The team appeared disjointed and underprepared, particularly in defence.
Bayern, meanwhile, came into the opener under some pressure after losing several key forwards in the summer, including Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sané, Thomas Müller, and Mathys Tel. Kane addressed the issue post-match, telling reporters:
“It’s probably one of the smallest squads I’ve ever played in.”
Díaz Makes Instant Impact
Luis Díaz, the latest high-profile signing from the Premier League—following Kane and Olise—joined Bayern from Liverpool this summer. The Colombian winger made an instant impact, scoring Bayern’s second goal with a fierce strike off the underside of the crossbar after an assist from Serge Gnabry.
Olise opened the scoring in the 27th minute, continuing his fine form in Germany from last season. He added his second just before halftime, coolly slotting home after receiving a deft pass from Gnabry.
VAR Denies Leipzig Consolation
Leipzig briefly thought they had pulled one back through Antonio Nusa, but the goal was disallowed after VAR showed that defender Castello Lukeba had taken a free kick while the ball was still rolling.
The disallowed goal only made matters worse for Leipzig, as Kane struck twice more within four minutes to complete the rout.
